finally here.

i would like to go straight to the issues, as is most comfortable for myself:
  • poor phone signal inside the flat
  • livingroom slow to heat, heating not particularly effective there, not surprising at all
  • bathroom has zero hooks to hang anything, and no smooth tiles to attach suction cupped hooks on - thanks interior designer or whoever didnt think this through
  • doors are 5cm thick, so no door hanger fits
  • despite thick doors, sound insulation is very poor, we can hear neighbors as well as anything happening in the other rooms quite well. well, this is the 2nd least surprising minus out of all.
  • kitchen is huge but the actual worktop area small, so i had to buy a separate kitchen island - and im not even an avid cook. still plenty of useless floor space to waste.
  • bathroom fan goes on with the light. i understand its purprose but i hate it.
  • the windows have blinds and nothing to hang real curtains on. i am a curtain person so blinds are very...meh.
the positives are too obvious no? its a huge flat, i feel almost embarrassed by it. in london specifically, where so many of my friends are forced to live in small rooms. and modern and neat. ok a few positive points that are not self evident but that i can appreciate: it is well insulated from external sound and cold air. the train track is in front (love watchint trains!) but we can barely hear them, it was something we really paid attention to before making an offer. and the bathroom is warm; very important! also we have a security alarm system, a good extra on a ground floor flat even is protected by a gate, too. and something that many would consider a minus; very poor recycling opportunities. there is theoretically recycling, but it's in another building, behind a coded gate, 150m walk from our place. it may be that we will not do that much recycling. and there is no bio waste or anything. ah, back to turkish times.

 moving day, last friday!

loving the dishes! Iittala 24h that my mom got me like 10 yrs ago.

view of kitchen coming from bedroom.

Vax vacuum cleaner. doctor was skeptical if i could pick a nice one, he was voting for a Dyson originally but we agreed that the price category those are in is just ridiculous. esp since we're not such eager cleaners. i did a lot of reading on vacuum cleaners and ended up with this one.
first things first...shoes. almost all the winter shows seemed to fit on this shelf...now we just need another shelf for summer shoes.

first meal in new home:

i AM loving my new work/computer station. and the amount of light coming in!!! :D and importantly, its not super cold, im quite comfortable. occasionally people and trains pass by....me happy.

so i had planned this Aalto vase for tealights but it is perhaps better with one larger candle in the middle.

wine rack.

the microwave looks a bit plastic-y, but its good.

new rugs came today;
a colorful one for doctor.

...and these colorful ones for kitchen.
ive had really early morning this week due to work. it wasnt so hard to get up actually but ive been really tired by the afternoon and early evening. i think the move and emotional 'work' associated with it is also being relased and it will take a few more days to get back to normal.

i finally got my iphone battery replaced (at Lovefone). the situation was so painful with the phone i was almost ready to buy a new one...  but instead i got the battery replaced, my employer will cover that, and it seems to have worked aaaand i am very happy!! now its just the normal...old phone weak battery, but thats fine.

reading deportation stories is depressing

life improvements in istanbul

being back from Australia starts doctors last year+ in specialization studies. for the remaining time he works "only" about 210h/month, plus with a few classes here or there, it can definitely be rounded up to 215 or more. but hey, thats less than before. and definitely down from the 350h from when he started...  but even after graduating and possibly changing hospitals, his working hours would most likely not go down much from 200. depending on the hospital and department as a senior you do have the right to skip work altogether or just sit in the coffee room...thats very turkish. but is that what all the hard work and years of studying is for? yes, in turkey it is; first shit is poured on you, and then its your turn to pour shit on others. for doctor to have what i call normal working conditions and get to excel in emergency medicine, we need to leave this country. he really enjoyed the hospital in Melbourne, it was organized, professional and overall nice place to work at - just as expected. something the turkish hospital environment has taught him better than the western counterparts would is how to manage unexpected situations - when there are way too many critical patients per staff, when a required medicine is not available etc. managing tricky situations is a skill too.

we made a trip to ikea yesterday. took around 4.5 hours, of which only 1+ in ikea. the rest was istanbul traffic. we got a Sultan Tveit mattress pad - but the short of it is that our bed is still not super comfy. in fact i think it increased the comfort level by only 10%...  thats an expensive 10%. but okay, we had to try. the other option was to buy a new mattress but since we plan to leave next year, it just seemed like to big of an investment (i gather a good mattress would've cost 800-1000TL if not more).

another item on the shopping list was a corner desk for me. i had already picked out Linnmon from the website. upon seeing it in the show room i realized that there will be a lot of dead space in the corner, so i will not be getting everything out of the added desk space, but it was still going to be an upgrade so okay. i needed more space to accustom the work laptop, basically.

australians have plenty of words of their own. the ones that got my attention were:

AUS - ENG
bottle shop = liqueur store
city = city center
doona = duvet
capsicum = pepper  (well, capsicum is technically correct, and i always hated pepper for its many meanings)
cab sav = short for cabernet sauvignon of course, but never heard it used anywhere else

a quick reminder of aussie prices (these notebooks were smaller than A5). around 28-30 eur/60 TL a pop. the pink one is sold on american online stores for around 19usd/17eur.

i found one affordable thing though: this small shower wall basket for 2 or 3 aud. i liked it and looked at it, and realized it would make for a great phone holder. i am tired of the phone hassle while sleeping on the wall side of our Istanbul bed. doctor is not home every night of course, but when he is, i have to climb over him to connect my phone to the charger by the bedside table. and in the mornings if i have an earlier wake up...  :/  so i removed the suction cups off this little thing and nailed it on the wall, then added an extension cord under the bed and pulled the charger cable up through the hole. add hair band around the cable so it wont fall back down and there it is!

i didnt like how the phone was sliding a little too easy on the hard plastic, but i had thought of the solution beforehand; silicone. it gives rubber like friction. and something i had not anticipated: i can see messages on the home screen as i lay on the bed.

more of jenni's life hack;  a multi hanger and kitchen utencil holder make for great earring storage.

today is election day in finland. the parliamentary election is important to me, but i failed to vote this time. the early voting venue was really far from Melbourne CBD and open until 4pm on 2 days, both which are almost full working days for me. i couldve pushed through if i had enough will, but i guess i didnt :( but according to my own beliefs, now i dont have the right to bitch until the next election.

torstai perjantaina

eilen:
mä en oo taas tänään kovin maailmojasyleilevä... nenä vuotaa, väsyttää, kaikki on idiootteja.

buns n plates

well im just trying to get through the day. ive managed to sell some of my shoes that i didnt use so i got a few euros of extra cash. yippee.. ..

got this skirt in mail. the photo totally does not do it justice. its full black, just really soft summer skirt. lovely. thank you eBay.

and i finally got the bunny on the wall :)

i finally have a solution for wearing shirts. to cover the front buttons from tearing apart, i can wear ties! and ties can be fun. pink/black anyone? i dont like office shirts really, but it would be nice to have that OPTION, and a few times a years at work i may have to look credible ;) then again a tie on a girl...credible? i think it probably looks best if i add some punk features to the look. not much, those days are over, but anyhow. but speaking of punk, i was filling my diswasher (for once!) and smiled at these plates

i used to do porcelain painting as a pre-teen/teen. for a while. in a local club with old grannies. i think they were often puzzled with me as i didnt want to do the perfect roses and other stuff... i was inexact and liberal with my style. quite the opposite of what porcelain painting is a bout... and i soon got tired of that. the kitty cat i painted is one of the ones i had at the time, called Kaneli-Misu. i cant say i like the plate much. the other one is more artistic (ehm) but its broken and glued together.

the backside of the "derangement plate" as i have named it. the Hcl - just eat it! -thing is so stupid and so cute. i was 14 in '94. i mustve picked the HCL (Hydrochloric acid) from the chemistry class or something, and the rest fromNike naturally. geez.

i need to go buy fabric dye... but before i can do that i need to dress up warmly enough to go out THERE. finnish april weather, fuckin hell.

arctic bunny

i had to think for a while about what day it is. thursday. well, i should have plenty of things to do, work not being the last title on the list. i really need to work more, to get more money...(i am paid by the hour - which i prefer). im kind of fucked after all the flight reservations we've done for our trip, as well as visa bills and such already stacked up. i need to clear the mess before it gets worse. ive been eating vegetables and microwave food and bread for a few days now...thats a start.

this bunny is going up on my wall. i love the character i see in her/him. i think its a him. "arctic hare", shot by National Geographic photographer Norbert Rosing.

my grandmom has been insisting on doing something for me. all of her grandchildren wanted a wall cloth or something... i honestly dont, and didn't want to lie. but now finally that i got the kitchen table, i figured she could make a tablecloth :) i don't think i could have ever imagined myself using one...but im trying to push my imagination here....:D for special occasions? for change? anyway i asked for red/pink in diff tones and got exactly that. made with rug loom, obviously. i had one of those when i was younger, but it wasn't like a big one... kids size so to say :P but i made oven cloths with it...

i saw Arttu yesterday. he gave me 2 books! Culture Shock! Cuba and Ultra Moderni Historia (which i think is easy to translate, all the words being actually derived from latin/germanic languages). it introduces us to the short history of e-mail, Seinfeld, heavy metal, dildo and action movies.

i was gonna go book myself an appointment for a tattoo, for a month from now (thats is the queue) , but realized i probably won't have money for it that soon. it'll take 2 paychecks at least to get out of this pit. i have to think of the positive side, i will have to think of my tattoo a bit longer then. the design is not ready yet anyways.

i really would appreciate a nap now.

clouds

ugh, cant really see my fancy flowers.

kitty in the living room.

birthday-girl wore her bunny ears for the party :)

veggies to dip. thanks guys for the great design.

random shots:

my punch was well-liked :) eventually i used all the booze i had and ran out of it anyway. you could see that too, ppl got pretty drunk. the original recipe was:
-vodka
-strawberry liquor
-banana liquor
-strawberry cider
-sprite zero

the drawing board was utilized well.

i have to thank F for a lot of this change in my home. maybe it was coming my way anyway but he's boosted it.

"list of stuff that white people like" - 80% true in my case.

Queen Multitask

i had to take a photo of the desk, it was that amusing. i dont always have the laptop there, obviously. and the screen was 'only' 15" but for my tv/movie watching needs its quite enough. just like now, i'm watching Nip/Tuck at the same time. usually keeping 2nd screen on the left is not a good idea, screens think #2 is always on the rigth side. but as i just use it occasionallu, i think i can handle it. also now i can turn it facing the 'living room'... and watch from my NEW CHAIR!

i couldnt finish watching Nip/Tuck, it got too uncomfortable. eww. some teen chick trying to get a middle aged guy to fall for her...

is this a cute chair? I KNOW! hah. i am lucky i got it. its huge. thats one space-eating seat for tomorrow...i think ill keep it though, i really do like it, and wouldnt mind having 2 comfy chairs...for sitting down in the evening, chatting F, or a friend...:)

now i know why wine is served in those almost ball-shaped glasses. its much slower to drink from those! try a common glass - wow.

screw up

i framed 2 of my NYC posters/photos. one more to go, but i didnt have the cash to buy yet another huge black frame so this one will have to wait a bit. ill just hang these 2 for now. in the process i broke the other 70x100cm frame by handling it carelesly. i didnt realize how fuckin fragile it is! it went to pieces so i had to get screws and put it back together...err. and then i fucked up the assembly in general. but finally i have it set up, ready to hang.

apparently i was a bit careless with my mirror too. it was pretty thin and old. and i held it on my lap while taping and gluing the pink ribbon on the edges. i also got black roses... looks pretty emo... yea. well. anyhow i broke the mirror as can be seen. too fuckin bad. some tape on the back and i put it on the wall anyway. oh i see my paw prints on it already! i just cant keep anything clean can i.

this bunny is up on the wall by my front door. watch the pose! she is not aware of her true beauty. a tiny bunny with a life ahead.

these bunnies are still looking for their place on my wall. if F and i were bunnies, i think thatd be us.

for my birthday! i couldnt afford to buy tons of those kitty-mugs , so im gonna have to get clear plastic cups and use the pink glittery stickers to decorate them.

seeing the light

Tiitta got inpired by my permanent make up and booked a time for herself too :)

i got a curtain from IKEA for 5 euros. it was on sale to begin with and then theyd run out of it. i asked if i could get the sample piece. yea its wrinkly and shit but since when did i care. the new curtain gave the kitchen a really beautiful illuminating light, soft and eerie.

i wasnt originally so fond of these chairs and seat cushions...but. my mind changed? ordinary chairs. the seat cushions have the same pattern as the curtain, only thicker material. but yea they look middle-aged. *shrugs*

my rug arrived! but actually, i had to pick it up, they didnt notice my phone number in the packing slip and my building has a door code. so, i got a note to pick it up. the post office is near so even with my 4 inch heels i handled this 10kg rug gracefully.

the rug is supersoft. this pleases me.

i also bought this from someone online. saved 13euros, its 39e as new, and this was still packed and all new. actually, i wouldnt mind paying a couple euros for assembling this...it was a bitch. but, there it is. show someone else who has as much storage space per sq meter! im gonna drill a hole in the back of the drawer and put my internet modem in there. out of sight.

pink curtains and amazing "flower" arrangements and pink mini stool (called MAMMUT ...)

ive been active in the decor apartment...

oh boy i have so much cleaning up to do...

cousin B will come fix my nails on thursday.

how does this sound for a punch:
0,75 liter vodka
0,5 liter banana liqueur
2 liters sprite zero
1 liter sweet strawberry cider

too sweet? well TOO BAD! i think ill like it! ill make a small test first though. im not used to this type of mixes and cant afford to fuck up.
