sea monsters
yesterday for the first time i watched a movie with the commentary track. Fight Club. it was alright but i admit i didnt pay much attention after the first half. but isnt the movie itself awesome?
last night we invited my cousin B and her husband over, just to hang out. we had a couple beers/ciders and watched tv and whatever. F and him had not met beforehand so this was kind of an introduction session as well?
in the night i had such weird loooooong dream. geez. i was in Tallinn, although it was sunny as in the south, beach and whatever. more like greece or spain. i was staying in a superfancy hotel, first with F and his family and later with cousin-B and her friends i guess. first it was F's birthday, and the dinner buffet was mostly dessert type foods and i wondered if thats because F had asked or had his relatives arranged it. near the hotel there was "the worlds tallest tower" but it was realy just like a lighthouse...very thin, with floors that had shops though, and you used a buggy-type car to drive (?!) the stairs up. in one of the higher floors there was a health station in which everyone had to get themselves checked. the the pressure at the top was so hard it would be possibly harmful if you had certain health issues, i dont know what thouygh. high blood pressure perhaps. the top was at 10km height i think. anyhow, some of F's (non-existent) relatives didnt pass the health check and we couldnt go there that day. i was relieved because i have a fear of heights. on his birthday, the hotel staff knocked on the suite door and the hallway was FULL of presents that had been mailed to him from back hom, from friend and relatives. i wandered among the presents and had teary eyes because i felt so impressed and overjoyed... *shrugs* and, i gave him 2 tshirts and white nail polish and something... and later F expressed his disappointment to me about the nailpolish. err. yea, i admit that was a bad idea. later in the dream it was B's birthday. and amongst other things there was a bar in the hotel that served free drinks between 6 and 7pm. i was there, waiting for B to arrive, as i knew she was doing her make up i guess, and i tried to call her and txt her to get her to come over soon, but she didnt reply. i didnt wanna get pissed on the drinks alone, so i just had one and she vame in really late...after the free hour. anyhow, then suddenly the waves at the sea (by which the hotel was) were really fuckin huge and hit the all-glass walls of the hotel. the floors were really like, 20 or 30meters... so the sight of huge waves coming and hitting it were impressive. i took a lot of snapshots. one part of the window broke finally and water "rained" in with the waves. we left to a restaurant/swimming pool floor which was at the top of the hotel, 12th floor, with a dome type of ceiling made from huge glass panels. so u could see the sky and the sea and it was just another really fuckin beautiful place. although the weather was nice and light, these huge waves continued to hit the hotel and i started to worry they would get too high to harm the ceiling too. and i kept taking snapshots and planning to send one in my blog "greetings from Tallinn"... so apparently at that point i was using my mobile phone instead of the cam. anyhow finally the waves were so high (massive, scary, but i wasnt afraid) they come over on top of the hotel's dome-shaped roof. and the middle, which was a round piece, gave in and broke. water sprinkled in with the glass. it was a powerfull view and i put a lot of stress on catching it with the huge delay that snapshots cam have... before the water hit the roof, it was looking pretty menacing and just before the roof broke, i wondered if this is the time to die then. just like when im wake, i felt like id rather not, just yet, but also i was content with it. there wasnt much i could do anyway, if a tsunami hits your hotel your done, aye? so after the water started coming in the top, we figured it was best to leave the floor. people not in panic there though, the families at the swimming pool did move away and i guess the athmosphere was slightly worried, but no one ran away screaming. so we took the elevator to go to the 4th floor where our rooms were. the elevator then had a big glass window and we were sitting on chairs and looking out. the elevator stopped at the 4th but err, i guess it wasnt our floor, we just kept sitting there... i was slightly annoyed but then the view got interesting. despite the 4th floor, we were now under water (?!). there was a sunken ship from god knows when, and reaaally interesting sea life. animals such as hippos, elephants and pigs. but sea-versions, with weird skins and horns and stuff... like really cool looking and imaginative. they were just hanging out at the bottom, slightly below my eye-level. there was also a 15ft lobster...scary to say at the least. the animals were so weird that i started wondering if we were being cheated... like if the sea-view was just projected or computer-animated. since i had never heard of these type of animals... also, our hotel now seemed to function like a ship as it moved, but that didnt cause a logic-problem for me. after that.... ugh, cant remember. but thats just minor details from the what seemed like a 4-hour drama action movie...
today i went to see Nan Goldin's exhibition at the museum of modern art (designed by american architect Steven Holl). it was a good experience actually, id seen some of her photos earlier of course, but to have them all there on the walls, and as slideshows with music was an inspiring experience. the way shes opened up her own life and shown the life around her inspires me and is bold. miss R, whose idea it was actually to go there in the first place, said that she could never be that open and sort of show that much of herself. which reminded me of the simple of fact of how different we all are. for me, this aspect of artistry has always interested me, besides as a viewer, but as an "artist". although i dont like using the word, but in lack of better. until i come up with something else or start likeing it. perhaps ill just say "photographer". thats not too much. i am one of those who wouldnt mind showing and sharing... egotistical extrovert? blah blah...
the museum shop (mostly books) was enticing as bookshops tend to be for me... loots on interesting art...oh dear. and art books are SO expensive. i just have to write down names and hope to find them cheap online. 50euros for a book is a bit much. especially when i got less than that on my account. *waits to receive salaries on monday* i got one book for 14e, though, Taschen's 1000 extra/ordinary objects. i spent hours with it just now. interesting and funny objects, or some old ones from a new aspect. the book has educational purpose too... ecology and culture wise. "this scythe is used to circumcise so and so many women in africa each year, sometimes a razor blade is used instead...the procedure is done...". well, that sounds a bit lecturish... which the book actually isnt. its quite smart and interesting.
our tap water is cleaner (of microbes) than the bottled spring water. when you put it that way, it sounds like the bottled water is actually dirty. which it aint. and as a spring water bottler commented; "the water could be cleaned 100% but it would not be labeled as spring water then, as spring water is not that pure". salads and other stuff we eat has tons more microbes. anyhow, i never buy bottled water. why BUY water when i can drink from the tap? regardless of which one is more pure, theyre both just fine for drinking.
i also got several pins from the museums shop. heres some.
umm this looks like my dinner the other night. a week ago maybe. i think a greek fast food place in a food garden. this salad was actually better than i expected, the lettuce at the bottom wasnt just tasteless crap, it was really well seasoned and tasty all the way. about 7euros.
